The recipient of a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Butler University, Dr. Amsalu Bizuneh earned a doctor of medicine from Emory University School of Medicine and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Illinois Medical Center. Since completing the three-year residency, Dr. Amsalu Bizuneh has worked seven years as a clinical lead hospitalist with Charlotte, North Carolina's Novant Health, where he is responsible for admitting and discharging patients as well as providing leadership in the delivery of hospital-based care. He focuses on areas such as cardiovascular disease, allergy and immunology, and diabetes and metabolism.

In addition to his work as a hospitalist, Dr. Amsalu Bizuneh is an avid runner and marathon participant who wrote and produced Born to Run: A Tale of Endurance, a documentary that details personal stories of athletes working toward making the USA Olympic team. The documentary was filmed in two countries and 15 states through nine months and included athletes like Fernando Cabada, Karl Dusen, and Fasil Bizuneh. Dr. Bizuneh's own personal best marathon time is just under three hours, which he achieved at the Great Smoky Mountain Marathon in 2000.
