A certified public accountant, certified fraud examiner, and certified internal auditor, Brenda Roberts has served in audit management positions for publicly-held companies, such as Safeway and Core-Mark International, private organizations, including AAA Northern California Nevada & Utah, and federal and local agencies.
She was the City Auditor for the City of Oakland from 2015 to 2018. During her tenure and under her direction she ensured all audits of tax measures and other required reports were completed timely—for the first time in more than 12 years. These audits report how taxpayer dollars are spent on voter-approved programs.
She also identified more than 4 million dollars in cost savings and revenue recapture in several city departments. She advocated for improved procedures to strengthen controls and put into place a fraud awareness program for employees. She was awarded the Knighton Award in 2016 for exemplary audit skills and reporting. And this is the second time she has been acknowledged by the Association of Local Government Auditors. She was awarded in 2006 during her tenure with the City and County of San Francisco.
In her other audit management roles, she introduced efficient practices that reduced internal control testing by 30%, without compromising compliance. She built an internal audit department from the ground up, to include a Whistleblower program. Through her knowledge and influence she helped improve the management of inventory in multiple countries through SKU rationalization.
Her career has focused on helping organizations improve processes by advocating for an organization-supported ethics program, strong internal controls and improved and streamlined work practices.
As an adjunct professor at both San Francisco State University and Golden Gate University, she instructed, influenced and assisted students in their career choices. In her free time, Brenda Roberts volunteers in her local community. She was appointed by the Mayor to serve as Commissioner on the Oakland Budget Advisory Commission and she participates in other neighborhood associations. She is a past board member of The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) International Committee for Academic Relations and is a past president of a local IIA chapter. She loves animals and volunteers at local animal rescue shelters. Her other interests include cooking, photography, hiking and traveling.
