CHIENSE TRANSLATION SERVICES

CLICK FOR TRANSLATION

In this article, we will discuss what makes Chinese a difficult language to translate from and to English. We will also discuss the role of Chinese translation services in making the translation easy.

Semantics
Semantics refers to a way language is comprehended. Semantics offers a way to articulating emotions, implications, and sentiments. Effective translation of semantics can serve to deliver an effective message. English is a phonetic language whereas Chinese is a morphological language. Because of this difference, English is more syntactocentric whereas Chinese is centered on semantics. Understanding these differences takes time and is usually the most difficult notion to take hold of during translation.

Jargons and Colloquial expressions
Colloquialisms and jargons offer another challenge for the translators. Chinese specific jargon like “關係 (guān xi)” or “師傅 (shīfu)” might confuse translators. Usually, translation of these expressions requires intuition – as would be described by experienced translators – which in turn requires experience. Jargons and colloquial expressions require memorization and experience. A glossary of terminologies along with quick search on the internet is always helpful.

Similar looking characters
For a new translator, Chinese characters 土 (tŭ - dirt) and 士 (shĭ - scholar) might look the same, but the length (shortness or longness) of the first and the second stroke makes all the difference. Similarly, 未 (WÈI – not yet) and 末 (MÒ – end) might look the same but comparing the length of the strokes demonstrates the difference between the characters as well. As such there are dozens of Chinese characters that look the same and require careful attention during the process of translation.

Grammar
Chinese and English are languages that aren’t related (even distantly). So there are many differences between them. Here is some key one:
1. Syntax: Both English and Chinese use subject-verb-object in a syntactical sense. However, when tense is added into the mix Chinese syntactical structure tends to fall apart. Tense is usually implied by adding a new character to a sentence.
2. English is “Topic prominent” whereas Chinese is “Subject prominent”. This is one of the key differences that drive grammatical differences between the two languages.
3. The same Chinese character may carry diverse connotations when combined with other characters (the character now becomes a word).
4. Chinese does not favor neologisms while English is constantly adding new words. Words like Bok choy, catsup, and chop suey are derived from Chinese. However, when computers were first introduced in China they were introduced as “Electric brains” from already existing words.
The role of Chinese translation services:
