Dr. Dathan Paterno laid the foundation for his career as a clinical psychologist by earning a bachelor of arts from Calvin College. In 2003, Dr. Dathan Paterno received his Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, Chicago. As part of his training, he cared for adults, adolescents, and children during a doctoral internship at the Arlington Center for Attention Deficit Disorders.
Two years after becoming a clinical psychologist, Dr. Dathan Paterno founded Park Ridge Psychological Services in Park Ridge, Illinois, where he holds the title of clinical director. Under his leadership, the private psychology practice has expanded to four locations throughout the greater Chicago area with a staff of counselors and therapists specializing in diverse psychological services.
Based on his experience, Dr. Paterno furnishes care rooted in two philosophical beliefs. First, he does not support the idea that genetic biochemical imbalances are the root cause of emotional problems and disorders. Rather, he posits that psychological "symptoms" are purposeful and meaningful responses to abnormal situations and should be treated using a holistic approach, one that also seeks to address genetic factors. Additionally, he believes alternative medications are more effective and safer than psychotropic medications, and to this end, he helps patients supplement or replace such medications.
