As chief of staff to US Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Fred Turner draws on more than two decades of experience in Washington, DC politics and public policy. He began his policy career in the office of Representative Alcee L. Hastings of Florida, where he served as a legislative assistant for approximately three and half years. After subsequently joining the office of Representative Karen McCarthy of Missouri for a brief tenure as legislative director, Fred Turner returned to Congressman Hastings’ office to become chief of staff.
Over nearly eight years in this role, Fred Turner served as the congressman’s chief policy advisor and his primary media contact and spokesman. He also managed all legislative staff at the congressman’s offices in Florida and Washington. Concurrent to these responsibilities, Mr. Turner served for a period as Democratic staff director of the US House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe.
Prior to assuming his current role in the office of Senator Bob Menendez in 2014, Fred Turner built additional experience as a chief of staff at the US Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. There, his responsibilities included advising the commission chairman, Senator Ben Cardin, and managing an office with an annual budget of $2.6 million and staff in both Washington, DC and abroad.
