A resident of San Francisco, Joe (Joseph) Murphy has more than a decade of experience as a librarian and futurist. As a science librarian with Yale University from 2007 to 2011, he managed a $2.5 million budget while overseeing operations for the instruction and technology division. Joseph “Joe” Murphy also designed and implemented a range of forward-looking technology and research initiatives across the libraries during this time.
In addition to an MBA, Joe Murphy holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in library and information science, and he is currently finishing a master’s degree in foresight (futures studies as a professional futurist). He has built upon this education through experience as a futures consultant for the library industry with Library Future, for which he made keynote addresses on emerging technologies and decision-making strategies around the world. Mr. Murphy also served as the director of library futures for Innovative Interfaces in Emeryville, California.
An active member of the field, Joe Murphy holds a professional certificate in strategic foresight and completed a certificate course in human-centered design through Acumen & IDEO.org. He has also published a range of journal articles, chapters, and books on futurist topics as well as emerging technologies, research, and librarianship. Through this training and experience, he has developed an ability to bring together data, foresight, and stakeholder needs in future-facing strategic ways.
