His passion in the field began as a child in New Jersey, when his father purchased a small coin collection for him at a garage sale. During high school, Michael Kaufman collected a variety of items, including fossils, baseball cards, and Herkimer diamonds, as he also built an expanding coin collection. Befriending Mr. Lane, a professional coin dealer in the area, his knowledge of the field expanded quickly and he began a successful career as a numismatist.
