Counselor

Richmond Counselling Centre

Shelley Behr MSW, RSW is a Richmond-based counselor who provides services to individuals, couples, families and children experiencing life difficulties, personal growth or seeking support during times of conflict and change.

Since 1998, Shelley has served clients both in a private practice and in an agency setting. She is the founder of the Richmond Counselling Centre in Richmond, B.C. and holds an M.S.W. degree from Wurzweiler School of Social Work. She is also a member of the BC College of Social Workers and the Collaborative Divorce Association of Vancouver.

In her private practice, Shelley uses a range of approaches to provide counselling, including: Cognitive Behavioural Theory, Energy Psychology, Family Systems Theory and Solution Focused Therapy. Her approach to counselling is compassionate and understanding, identifying the individual nature of each client's needs.

As a collaborative divorce coach and child specialist, Shelley utilizes a collaborative approach to help couples create a parenting plan, communicate more effectively, and find a way to support the kids through the divorce in a less adversarial way. She promotes conflict resolution skills and teaches parents how to keep conflict away from the children.

Shelley also works with clients on a variety of issues such as anxiety, depression, phobias, relationship issues, adolescent/child issues, separation and divorce, grief, loss and life transitions. Her solution-focused approach to therapy helps give clients a better understanding of their life experiences and helps them identify core issues, so that they can find grounding and peace.

Outside of running her practice, Shelley has provided social work services to Surrey Memorial Hospital in the hospital’s emergency, medicine, surgery, oncology, and maternity units. She was also a counselor at Ceridian EAP, Homewood EAP and Trauma Program, and Health Canada.

Her professional affiliations include: BC College of Social Workers, BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (RCC), and International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP), among others.
Shelley Behr enjoys biking, exercise, playing mahjong and raising money for breast cancer research.
