Billing itself as the “best of both worlds,” the Shenandoah Valley Family Practice Residency offers a fully accredited, three-year residency training program in a rural setting. The program maintains affiliations with the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and welcomes both doctors of medicine and doctors of osteopathic medicine, all of whom achieve board eligibility through completion of the program. Headquartered in a small-town practice in Front Royal, Virginia, the Family Practice Residency also operates out of the award-winning, 411-bed Winchester Medical Center in the larger city of Winchester.
Over the years, multiple members of the program’s faculty have received grants and honorific distinctions from a number of regional and national organizations, including the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Most recently, faculty members Drs. Bill Kerns and Jon Winter obtained a large research grant on Alzheimer’s disease and physician prescribing from the Virginia Center on Aging.
