A traditional yoga center focused on learning, spiritual growth, and physical health, the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat Bahamas welcomes guests from all backgrounds. The Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat Bahamas teaches the philosophy of Vedanta, which is focused on recognizing the oneness between the individual and the supreme and the illusory nature of the apart separation between the individual and others. The ashram founder, Swami Vishnudevananda taught this ancient philosophy of Vedanta alongside yogic practices, meditation, and selfless service which are preparatory disciplines for the attainment of the highest knowledge of Vedanta.
Swami Vishnudevananda (1927-1993) as a young man became a disciple of Swami Sivananda, for whom he would name his ashram and the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, of which it is a part.
Swami Vishnudevananda, an expert in hatha and raja yoga, became a leading exponent of yoga for Western students. He developed a five-pillar classification of yogic principles: proper physical exercise through yogic asanas; proper breath control through focused yogic breathing (pranayama); proper rest and relaxation of mind, spirit, and body; proper nutrition through a natural, vegetarian diet; and a positive mental attitude expressed in thought, meditation, and concentration. The author of the now-classic text The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga, he was also known as a peace activist and pilot.
Swami Sivananda (1887 -1963), born in south India, was a towering figure in 20th century yoga, whose philosophy centered on the ancient principles of service, love, giving, purification, meditation, and realization. He stood in a long line of teachers whose ideas go back to an 8th century sage, Adi Sankaracharya, who codified an array of practices into a unified system based on the teachings of the Upanishads.
